Honoring the Col. John Stiteler Family

Many of us, from Upper Turkeyfoot and Middlecreek Townships, have fond memories of "The Colonel" who lived on Middlecreek Farm, in Middlecreek Township, Somerset County, PA. The farm was located on the "Dickey Hill," between King's Bridge and New Lexington. The Colonel would often be seen riding his horse in the area, and according to some, carried candy to be passed out to the local children. For the local farm children, he was a character larger than life.

His connection? Col. Stiteler's Grandmother was Eliza Jane Burnworth, whose own Grandmother was Hulda Mitchell Hartzel - names that can be found in the minutes book of Jersey Baptist Church, as founding members. Eliza married Norman Bruce Critchfield, who would go on to do great things, not only serving as Chaplain for the 142nd PA Volunteers during the Civil War, but also being elected to the PA Senate. (Please see his bio from previous link).
